올해 지스는 새로운 체육관에서 IASAS(Interscholastic Association of Southeast Asian Schools) 배구와 농구 대회를 주최합니다.
Question and Answer in English▅ Please introduce JIS briefly. Jakarta International School (JIS) is established in 1951. It started as an embassy-school in down town as a small house. The students were mainly the children of the ambassadors who came to Indonesia. However, soon as Indonesia began to flourish as industry grew, JIS expanded its campus by building Pattimura-elementary campus (PEL) and Pondok Indah Elementary school (PIE). Now, we eventually ended up with PEL, PIE, Cilandak Middle and High school.▅ What is your philosophy on education? One of the things that I believe strongly is that the old role of a teacher of being my age, of giving feed back days, has all gone now. What the world really needs are students who have learned how to learn, because the aspect of livelong leanings has never been stronger than nowadays. Say you’re hired by a company. They will expect you to learn and learn as the company changes and evolves. They do not want you to necessarily depend on other people for your learning. They want you to show initiative and independence as a learner. So I like working in an environment where independence of a learner is encouraged: teachers are not giving the answer but facilitating students to find the answer. We highly encourage activate learning by stimulating curiosity and interests by giving some directing questions. So, to me now the students are absolutely the center of learning, not the teachers; which is also the direction that JIS is pushing forward. It is called empowering student, giving them the power, not just learn here at JIS, but through the whole life as a person, employee, husband and wife. Learning never stops and the demand to learn is only going to increase in this 21st century of competitive world. So you have to be incredibly adaptable, flexible and brilliant, which can only come from inside of you, because the teachers and the college professors will come and go. The only constant that you will have lies within you; that's what you draw upon. So we are in the business of growing what’s inside of each student like confidence, brilliant and skills. ▅ Is there any aspect at JIS high school students needs to be improved on? What do you expect from JIS students? One of the criticisms is that, our students don't often commit to something unless they get something back. I think our students here are incredibly motivated and driven, but I wouldn't say that they’re always happy. They’re often stressed, under pressure and doing things for someone else. So what I would like our students to really focus on is to think about what energy that really drives them. ▅ What do you recommend for students to do at JIS to best enjoy their high school moments? One of the greatest opportunities being at JIS is service learning. There are 32 different kinds of service clubs at JIS operated by students mainly. I believe that JIS students are from very privilege background, they’re 1% of world in terms of what they have now. They have everything they want, so they need to learn about people who did not get the same privilege as them. They should learn how lucky they are, so need to devote themselves to unprivileged people. When people do service activities, they change. Students who used to be self-centered transforms a lot by the time of their graduation. If they learn how to help unprivileged people when they’re young, they will continuously help others too after they become adults. So, please take advantage of it. Be proud that each of you can actually help constructing bridges to their lives in the future. ▅ Is there anything you want to say to Korean parents or students?I personally am very fascinated in Korea, and also most of the other Asian countries; therefore, I wish more interaction between Western and Korean cultures. I want to encourage them to spend more time with people from other cultures too. JIS offers great opportunities to make friends who came from the other side of your world. At JIS, we don't have to build our own country and segregate the others. Students should break down the barrier between Korean and other society, although they are very different in some aspects, like the way they celebrate birthdays, two hours of sleep, and etc. I think that Korean itself is incredibly united nation and thus, feel greater security when they’re together but I want to see our students altogether trying to embrace diversity and get along with people with outside of that. I am personally very fascinated in the Korean culture because Koreans comprises 30% of HS, meaning that 1 out of 3 students are Korean. In school-wide, it is about 15%. Therefore, one of my goals this year is to visit Korea and learn about the world that our Korean students will be going to after graduating at JIS. ▅ What are the unique education curriculums JIS has? I can proudly say that HS offers 264 courses, and 45 of them are comprised of Creative Arts courses. JIS is the only school in South East Asia that offers both International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Program (AP) courses along with JIS Diploma courses. I personally believe that students do not have to be “super stars” in academic to graduate HS. We therefore, offer all the intermediate courses that are essential to graduate HS. However, we also offer the most challenging courses like IB and AP to help students preparing for best universities in the world such as Harvard, Stanford and Seoul National University. Therefore, I never heard of single alumni visiting me saying that they were not prepared for university. So I am very proud of academic curriculums and systems at JIS. ▅ What are the facilities you are most proud of?A facility that I am most proud to introduce is G-module, the science module. It is a relatively brand new building in JIS that was built in 2011. I particularly like G-module, because teachers actively participated in designing the classroom and the physical appearances. We had to consider what factors would optimize the classrooms and labs in terms of learning point of view, and the outcome is collaborative teachers’ area in the first floor, and project rooms for students as well as all suitable classroom to learn Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Environmental science.Furthermore, a garden is built in the top of the building. Another facility to introduce is our brand new High School (HS) gymnasium that just finished renovation in August 2013. Our old gym used to be hot and humid because there were no air conditionals but now, after a year and half months of construction period, is reborn as indoor-gymnasium. We are hosting several Volleyball and Basketball this year at JIS in the new gym. ▅ What is your opinion on ‘one-to-one’ systems? I think the one-to-one is almost inevitable. We have got way different generation of learners now. So we will be negligent if we don’t try using technology, which will probably be the most important learning tool in the world. But having said that, I think it is absolutely important to balance them. As species, we need to interact. Why have schools if we can’t interact? I am happy with it as long as we balance off, because what I am trying to do is to get students away from overuse. The long-term studies show that things like depression and lack of social skills that cause by having too much time spending on computers.▅ What is your opinion on “non-uniform policy” at JIS? When I teach in Australia, it is usual for all schools to have uniform policy, which is very Victorian based on the British heritage. Uniforms give conformity, uniformity and also identity. However, as I moved to international schools, I started to do some research on uniforms, and there is no research that says uniform has any impact on learning at all. And I started to think that uniforms are more for other people than the students. Parents seeing as convenience, conformity, and guarantee respect with their children in uniforms. But here at JIS, if we brought uniform it would have changed us fundamentally. And there is no need for us to walk around Jakarta with uniform for security point of view and moreover, we don't need it actually. We actually want our students to be proud of their Korean background instead of being recognized as “JIS students”. And the longer I’ve at JIS, the more convinced I am that uniforms are not in our best interest because what makes us special is the diversity of ourselves. ▅ Please tell us your educational background and how have you came to JIS. I became a teacher by the time I was 22 with bachelor degree in teaching. Then I got first masters degree in education and ministration in the age of 28. And then I finished my 2nd masters degree in 2012 in Hong Kong. It was the first year of international leadership being offered and I was the first graduate of it, so I am very proud of. It was good for me to understand various cultures as a leader. Before coming to JIS, I became vice principal and principal in Australia. By that time, my wife and I decided to take our kids to show the world. Australia is a lovely country but there is more to see in the world. We wanted to stay close to Australia but not Australia, and we found that JIS would be the optimum school for us. I began in JIS by teaching in elementary in 2002. In 2005, I moved to HS and worked in the math department. I also worked for athletic director for a year and then I became the VP of the students’ affair and then principal. This is my 4th year as the HS principal. ▅ What activity do you enjoy the most at JIS?What I enjoy the best is being with students. I love having conversation with our fascinating and talented students. If I only read media, it often says high school students are very depressing. But I found it the exact opposite. They gave hope for our future. I love seeing them enjoying their youth, being in sports team and performing in concerts held in JIS such as unplugged, PMU and JIS stock. I respect that for the courage. I feel encouraged when I talk to my students. ▅ As a principal, what is your vision/mission statement of JIS high school? I think it is really to inspire joyful and active learning while being the best for the world. I encourage joyful learning when studying, because if you enjoy it, you will stick with it. If you do it just for obligation, or for yourself, that’s not smart. You’ll end up self-centered, ultimately it will be unproductive and unhappy. But if you do things for the others, your intelligence will bring you greater satisfaction. Best for the world means no matter how small your contribution is, don’t give up on it because once you give up you will always be cynical on everything. You should be critical thinker, instead. ▅ What is your life motto?“In life, you usually get what you deserve.” It both works both positive and negatively. If you really put efforts aimed at a positive return, you will get that. So if you get negative feedback because of your inactions and laziness, that's what you’ll get back too. If you think about “what am I contributing”, what you get back will be very much related to that. Another one is Mother Teresa’s quote. I remember when I was a young boy, watching a documentary about Mother Teresa who worked with the most deprived people. And her famous quote, which most of the people don't understand, “after years of working in the worst condition possible, I got back more from those children than what I’ve gave them.” I try to impart that in my life as well, which is also the message that I’d like to give to others.
